Introducing Geralt the Witcher - revered and hated - who holds the line against the monsters plaguing humanity in the bestselling series that inspired the Witcher video games and a major Netflix show。

Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher, a man whose magic powers and lifelong training have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless assassin。

But not everything monstrous-looking is evil; not everything fair is good 。 。 。 and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth。

Andrzej Sapkowski, winner of the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement award, started an international phenomenon with his Witcher series。 The Last Wish is the perfect introduction to this one-of-a-kind fantasy world。

Aangezien het een bundel kortverhalen is, is dit boek goed om vertrouwd te geraken met het fantasy-genre。

It was great! I recognized most scenes like the ones that happened in the show but were different。 I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Dandelion and Geralt as two friends。 In general, I enjoyed Geralt being someone who considers his morals and emotions, even if it's sometimes a struggle。Overall, an enjoyable read! weirdly enough, while i enjoyed the episodic style in the netflix show, it was a little boring in book form。 or it could be because the show is so closely influenced by the book that it felt repetitive (since i’m also rewatching the show as i read this)。 either way, i really liked it and will be reading the next one!!

This was initially published in 1993, but you will see better depictions of women in books written in the 1700s。The cast of characters consists of males, sperm vessels, angry women, and priestesses who are either angry or sperm vessels。 The main character kills monsters or removes curses--also the sperm vessels like him。The stories kind of drag on a bit。 Basically, if you read the previous paragraph, you know how they go。I have seen this series recommended on many fantasy sites, so I do want to This was initially published in 1993, but you will see better depictions of women in books written in the 1700s。The cast of characters consists of males, sperm vessels, angry women, and priestesses who are either angry or sperm vessels。 The main character kills monsters or removes curses--also the sperm vessels like him。The stories kind of drag on a bit。 Basically, if you read the previous paragraph, you know how they go。I have seen this series recommended on many fantasy sites, so I do want to continue on as this is just a prologue。 I don't know, though。 。。。more

Everyone knows Geralt of Rivia as the monster-slayer, but Sapkowski's collection of short stories show us that even the most fearsome hunter has his moments of love, social awkwardness, and dry humor。 Everyone knows Geralt of Rivia as the monster-slayer, but Sapkowski's collection of short stories show us that even the most fearsome hunter has his moments of love, social awkwardness, and dry humor。 。。。more

I decided to give this a go after enjoying the TV show, and wasn’t disappointed。 Geralt is an entertaining action hero, someone who tried to do good for others but is cranky about it, and the supporting cast are fun takes on stock fantasy characters。 I enjoy the spin the author puts on folkloric beasts and fairy tales, and the fact that he gives just enough exposition so the reader can visualize things without wallowing in backstory as some Hugh fantasy authors are wont to。My only real criticism I decided to give this a go after enjoying the TV show, and wasn’t disappointed。 Geralt is an entertaining action hero, someone who tried to do good for others but is cranky about it, and the supporting cast are fun takes on stock fantasy characters。 I enjoy the spin the author puts on folkloric beasts and fairy tales, and the fact that he gives just enough exposition so the reader can visualize things without wallowing in backstory as some Hugh fantasy authors are wont to。My only real criticism is that the dialog on occasion gets kind of stilted in that “what go, good innkeeper” sort of fashion, it I’ll happily attribute that to the translation, and most of the time it’s pretty natural, and sometimes pretty funny 。。。more

Wow what a lovely world Sapkowski builds through subtle revelations in scenes of dialogue and action。 And the plots of each story being stand-alone while all part of an over-arching framework。 Brilliant!

I finally got around to trying out the Witcher books, and fortunately I had a lot of fun with this one。Nobody ever told me about the humor in these books, nor that (at least this first book) retold several fairytales with new sardonic twists。 All the twists on the old tales were fun to read, as well as all the dry humor。 And I was really surprised that Geralt kept being wrong about things -- just as soon as he'd say a certain monster or other didn't exist, BANG there it was。 Ha!I gotta say I am I finally got around to trying out the Witcher books, and fortunately I had a lot of fun with this one。Nobody ever told me about the humor in these books, nor that (at least this first book) retold several fairytales with new sardonic twists。 All the twists on the old tales were fun to read, as well as all the dry humor。 And I was really surprised that Geralt kept being wrong about things -- just as soon as he'd say a certain monster or other didn't exist, BANG there it was。 Ha!I gotta say I am very impressed by the translator。 The resulting prose is a joy to listen to, not at all clunky or artificial/translated-sounding。 And in audio these are narrated by Peter Kenny, who is one of the best in the business -- you could not ask for anyone better to provide the accents, voices, and sardonic personable delivery。 I can't think of a single complaint there。And finally, this book makes it clear to me why the Netflix series has always seemed so disjointed。 The first two books are usually referred to as "short story collections", but they really aren't (at least in book 1) -- they are more like fix-up novels constructed from vignettes, with interludes at a temple where Geralt stops to rest。 Most of the vignettes don't have complete story arcs -- they're mostly slices of life that build in a disjointed way on other vignettes within the collection。 There is a definitive climax to the book as a whole, but not always a climax within each vignette。 Anyway, now I understand why the Netflix series is structured the way it is -- that series is more-or-less following the pattern of the first books, and the first season has already told several of the tales included in this one, The Last Wish。Anyway, lots of fun。 I've already started book 2, Sword of Destiny, and I'm very happy that the entire series is now available in English。 。。。more

I’m not a huge fantasy reader but this was passable。 I found it fairly straight forward and simple story wise。 The world didn’t feel as rich as Game of Thrones (a fantasy series I did enjoy getting lost in), nor the characters as complex。 I didn’t feel like there was any overall momentum to the story until I realised about a third of the way through that this first book is a collection of short stories tied together。 The three stories I found the most entertaining were The Witcher, A Grain Of Tr I’m not a huge fantasy reader but this was passable。 I found it fairly straight forward and simple story wise。 The world didn’t feel as rich as Game of Thrones (a fantasy series I did enjoy getting lost in), nor the characters as complex。 I didn’t feel like there was any overall momentum to the story until I realised about a third of the way through that this first book is a collection of short stories tied together。 The three stories I found the most entertaining were The Witcher, A Grain Of Truth and The Last Wish。 Some of them featured in the TV series which was also just OK。 Each time I picked up the book it would take me a few pages to get into it and I never felt hooked。 I liked the moral ambiguity in the Grain of Truth story。 A man assaults a woman who curses him and turns him into a monster。 He grows to like being a monster since he is now strong and has magical abilities he didn’t have before。 He doesn’t want to be changed back into an ordinary human。 It’s not a cliche ‘true love solves everything’ fable。 I also liked the genie/djinn folklore in The Last Wish。I have the first book in the actual Witcher series which I will read, but not sure I will stick with the whole series。 I would like to try the video games if I can ever find the time to spare 。。。more

*pops a confetti popper* yay we finished thisUh。。。 This is a way to introduce people to a property sure。。。 I just thought the infamous Witcher would be a little better at what he did? Getting your shit pushed in the WHOLE time and being lost in the sauce for most of it is a fun read, but besides being mediocre at his job。。。 Am I going to read Sword of Destiny and have the same opinion? Probably。 But bless us by whatever diety you decide to pray to if the actual story is bad, 2 books from now。

I loved the adventure in this book。 Geralt was full of surprises and their is so much more to his story than what is seen in the Netflix series。 I loved following him as he battled and saved many lives。 It was interesting how there were a few stories akin to fairy tales。 I can't wait to start the next book。 I loved the adventure in this book。 Geralt was full of surprises and their is so much more to his story than what is seen in the Netflix series。 I loved following him as he battled and saved many lives。 It was interesting how there were a few stories akin to fairy tales。 I can't wait to start the next book。 。。。more

The world is full of magic, curses, beasts and fairytales。 Pretty much the witcher visits many fairy tails we are familiar with and then put a spin on them in Witcher's on way。 You can see the seven dwarves, you can say hi to the genie, go to a ball with rumpelstiltskin and have a tea with the beast that is you have to kill the beauty first。 The series did justice to this book。 They didn't hide any details。 This book is a good introduction to the Witcher's world of lore and magic。 You get swampe The world is full of magic, curses, beasts and fairytales。 Pretty much the witcher visits many fairy tails we are familiar with and then put a spin on them in Witcher's on way。 You can see the seven dwarves, you can say hi to the genie, go to a ball with rumpelstiltskin and have a tea with the beast that is you have to kill the beauty first。 The series did justice to this book。 They didn't hide any details。 This book is a good introduction to the Witcher's world of lore and magic。 You get swamped by it and just don't want to let go off the world。 This is a good fantasy series。 And one of the finest。 No wonder they have a whole plethora of games and series on it。 。。。more

Even though I don’t particularly enjoy fantasy books and find them a bit difficult to read, I really loved this book! The author writes pretty simply and explains a lot through dialogue, so the world isn’t too hard to understand like in other fantasy novels。 If you liked the tv show, you will fall in love with the book。 One tip: Don’t let the first page deter you…
